During the Renaissence era a goldsmith undertook all types of work in precious metals, silver and gold, whether it was jewellery or functional silverware, coinage  or ceremonial items, like chalices or plates. Invariably they obtained patronage from The Church, Royalty or the Nobility, but also merchants who had obtained great wealth from the newly founded colonies in South America, the East Indies and Africa and the Far East.

The skills used across this diverse range of Trades are still alive today, and  found in the one place, ROUGE Jewellers in Black Rock, Melbourne.
